Sarah van Sonsbeeck’s ‘Moment of Bliss’ from 2012 is a site specific light installation, recalling a sunset. The work was originally made for the Funeral Museum (Uitvaartmuseum) in Amsterdam. While thinking about what to contribute to such a sad place, the sunlight lit up Van Sonsbeeck’s studio, inspiring her to use this natural phenomenon to ‘lighten’ the mood. The stage light is positioned in such a way that it mimics the angle of a natural sunset.
The work is sight specific in the sense that it is positioned in the gallery space in such a way that it really engages with the architecture, either emphasizing the architectural features in place or obscuring them. In ‘Chasing Rainbows’ the work dissolved the corner of the gallery, imposing a circle instead.
