Pan con Pan (Bread with Bread, 2011), is...well, bread. René Margritte wrote 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe' beneath the image of a pipe. One could imagine how Wilfredo Prieto would do it: the work would be a pipe, the material used for the piece would be a pipe, and the title would be Pipe. The strategy is evident- to avoid metaphor at all cost. This selfreference merely draws our attention to the hidden pitfalls of language. It amplifies the limitations of words by depicting exactly what they describe. At the same time, they also generate feedback loops, circularities that point to the description of an individual and social reality which needs itself to justify its existence.
