Ed van der Elsken, 'enfant terrible' of Dutch photography, was a photographer and filmmaker who expressed his meetings with people in photos, photo books and films for more than 40 years.
Ed van der Elsken's work is highly subjective, portraying striking individuals he encountered on his travels, documenting his own life and that of his surrounding.
Samuel Sarphati (Amsterdam, January 31, 1813 - June 23, 1866) was a Jewish physician, chemist, benefactor and bread manufacturer who played an important role in the development of education, public health, urban development and the industry of Amsterdam in the middle of the 19th century ... .. Sarphati would not experience the realization of many of his plans. What he did experience was the realization of the monumental and modern Paleis voor Volksvlijt on the Frederiksplein (now the Nederlandsche Bank). Consisting mainly of iron and glass, this industrial and exhibition building resembled the Palais de l'Industrie from Paris or the Crystal Palace from London.
