Yael Bartana's (b. 1970) critically acclaimed three films—Mary Koszmary (Nightmares) (2007), Mur I wieza (Wall and Tower) (2009), and Zamach (Assassination) (2011)—will be screened for the first time in Miami as part of PAMM Summer Screenings.
The trilogy revolves around the activities of the Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland (JRMiP), a political group that calls for the return of 3,300,000 Jews to Poland, the land of their forefathers. Traversing a landscape scarred by the histories of competing nationalisms and militarisms, the films overflow with the narratives of the Israeli settlement movement, Zionist dreams, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and the Palestinian right of return.
Pérez Art Museum Miami Associate Curator Diana Nawi will introduce the trilogy. This screening is part of a series of public programs that contextualizes the work of artists who have been commissioned to create new projects that will debut with the opening of Pérez Art Museum Miami in December 2013. For her project at PAMM, commissioned in conjunction with the Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon, Israel, Bartana is researching and producing a work in São Paulo focused on the rise of Pentecostalism in Brazil.
