Annet Gelink Gallery is pleased to announce that the work Mine (2021) by Lara Schnitger has been acquired by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam to be part of its permanent collection, thanks to the support of the Berckel-Boehmer Fund.
By pairing techniques like dyeing, quilting, weaving, and sewing with tough and rebellious postures and messages, Lara Schnitger pushes the expressive power of traditional crafts and the representation of women on canvas. Whereas the tactility of the works is soft and inviting, the works’ graphic aesthetics lend a jarringly bold impact. In this work, Schnitger reflects on current socio-political themes such as abortion and the right for women to decide over their own bodies.
The Berckel-Boehmer Fund has been established with the aim of ensuring that groundbreaking works by female artists are included in major museum collections.
UPCOMING
Manifesta 15
Barcelona, ES
08.09 — 24.11.2024
Lara Schnitger presents newly commissioned work for Manifesta 15. Together with women from the metropolitan region of Barcelona, she will make 12 banners which will hang from 12 chimneys located across the participating cities. These chimneys are now symbolising an industrial past without any context, since most textile factories were demolished and all that remains is a lonely chimney. Consequently, this project aims to give them their voice back and connect them with their histories and communities.
Museum Kranenburgh
Bergen, NL
17.11.2024 - 11.05.2025
Lara Schnitger's solo exhibition at Museum Kranenburgh revolves around her research on ecofeminism, a movement that sees connections between the oppression of women and the exploitation of nature. With a sense of humour and in a very personal visual language, Schnitger brings contemporary, topical discussions on stereotypical images of women, gender inequality and solidarity to the fore.
